Powerboat Instructor
Neil, the school's principal, is a Powerboat and PWC trainer. Courses are run to strict RYA guidelines; there are certain pre-course requirements which are listed below.
Courses are run on an "on-demand" basis and are subject to the minimum course numbers. Please contact us for proposed course dates and to inform us of your availability.
Duration: 3 days
Requirements: Hold the RYA Level 2 powerboat certificate, valid First aid certificate, and ideally have navigation knowledge to Day Skipper theory standard. Potential instructors are required to have plenty of practical experience of handling a variety of different powerboats.
Course Content: RYA guidelines require all PBI candidates to undertake a pre-course assessment to ensure you are ready for the course and allow you to work on any shortfalls. This 1 day session costs £120 and has a very positive effect in increasing pass rates of the course itself. The pre-assessment ensures you are suitable for instructing by giving you time in a boat to carry out a few evolutions to show the level of competence you hold and to appraise you of any bad habits you may have acquired since you first did your Powerboat Level 2 course. You will also be asked to give a short talk on any of the Powerboat Level 2 syllabus. The syllabus can be found in the RYA Powerboat Logbook (G20), it is important to buy the latest copy of this since the syllabus does change slightly every few years.
The pre-assessment and the PBI course have 3 general outcomes:
A Pass
An Action Plan - notification of any shortfalls and a plan to overcome them followed by a re-assessment or simply some self study
A Fail - Obviously this will need you to work hard to overcome the points which have caused this but it doesn't stop you applying for a new course later
The 3 days of the actual course will be spent both in the classroom and on the water covering the RYA Scheme, teaching styles, lesson planning, presentations, improving your own powerboating and will include time with “real” students. The course is run by an RYA Powerboat trainer who will be joined by another Trainer on day 3 to act as moderator.
