Sailing Courses

We operate a number of modern sailing yachts; the Beneteau Oceanis 331 is our current school boat and is designed to be easy to handle. All our training yachts are professionally cleaned after each course and fresh linen put on board to ensure you have the best experience with us. We pride ourselves on providing a comfortable sailing experience which is far from the damp, smelly, cold expectation that can be offered elsewhere.

 We operate around the sheltered South Devon coastline of the Torbay, Dartmouth, Salcombe and Plymouth areas. We like to sail to perfect, tranquil areas and specialise in showing you Devon's most beautiful spots. Marinas feature as a daily stop, but evenings are usually spent in quaint towns & villages tucked away in quiet estuaries. Riverside pubs provide a great opportunity to reflect on a great days' sailing.

Our RYA approved instructors are hand-picked and very experienced with at least 15 years at sea, they offer sailing instruction following a tried and tested structure. We aim to give you an enjoyable time, whilst gaining valuable knowledge on the way. We care about you and your personal training needs. The sailing instruction is given at a manageable, understandable pace. We tailor each course to the requirements of the candidates on board at the time and our student to instructor ratio is normally only 3:1. Navigation is taught using traditional charting techniques along with electronic methods using E-Series Raymarine chart plotters and Radar.

 

 

Tuition on board your own boat from £250 per day

ICC, Day Skipper, Yachtmaster™ training etc. Up to 3 people either carrying out an RYA course or simple boat acquaintance if required. All boat expenses, instructor's food and travel paid by client. Please call us to book tuition on your own boat and discuss the training options.

 

RYA Start Yachting Experience - £254

Our 2 day weekend courses are designed for those wishing to learn the basics and gain some confidence in boat handling. The perfect course for people who would like to see if sailing is for them.
You will be taught basic skills and routines on board, whilst enjoying your first exposure to sailing. Price includes accommodation on board one of our yachts, all meals, fuel & mooring fees. Waterproof clothing loan available on request.

RYA Competent Crew or Day Skipper Course - £630

A five day practical course which can accommodate both Day Skipper and Competent Crew candidates, depending on ability and course requirements. Price includes accommodation on board one of our yachts, all meals, fuel & mooring fees. Waterproof clothing loan available on request.
We familiarise you with the yacht and spend the week port hopping whilst you gain experience and work towards your qualification. During this time we provide you with breakfast, lunch, general refreshments and evening meals. We like to stop at pleasant anchorages and harbours and there will be the opportunity to pop ashore for a sociable drink on most evenings.

Competent Crew - Your course will teach you all the skills to become a competent and efficient crew member. Course content will include learning how to steer the boat, what the sails do, knot-tying, basic seamanship principles and safety procedures.

Day Skipper - During the course you will build on previous experience under supervision from one of our experienced RYA Instructors. You will be directing the crew, coming alongside, handling the boat under sail and power, navigating during the day and getting some night hours under your belt. You will also learn the basics of engine maintenance and be expected to take control in a man overboard emergency situation.

RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster™ Preparation - £630

A five day practical course for Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster™ candidates. Price includes all meals, fuel & mooring fees. Waterproof clothing loan available on request.
We familiarise you with the yacht and spend the week port hopping whilst you gain experience and work towards your qualification. During this time we provide you with breakfast, lunch, general refreshments and evening meals. We like to stop at pleasant anchorages and harbours and there will be the opportunity to pop ashore for a sociable drink on most evenings.
This course will include you planning & skippering more challenging passages with pilotage at day and night, boat handling and safety & emergency procedures. If you are looking to gain the Yachtmaster™ Offshore/Coastal Certificate, please let us know and we will arrange an examiner for you. If you are aiming to take your Yachtmaster™ Offshore or Coastal exam, we cannot over emphasise the need for personal preparation, your theory knowledge should be instinctive. Primarily the candidate being examined is being assessed for his/her ability to be a good skipper. You should exercise safe practices and judgment without being too overcautious. Our emphasis during this course is consolidate all that you have already learned and fine tune any areas of improvement. You will be expected to be fully skilled in the following areas: communication with crew members, confident and competent boat handling, high standard chart work and navigation, safety briefings and procedures, radio communication, meteorology skills,

Combined 9-day Day Skipper Course - £954

4 days RYA Day Skipper shore based course one week followed by the 5 day practical course on the next week. The course starts on a Monday morning and concludes on the following Friday afternoon. This completes your full Day Skipper qualification in a fast-track fashion. This course is intensive and requires concentration and commitment to learning.
For the theory elements, all parts of the syllabus will be covered in our Brixham classroom and all training aids are provided by us. There will also normally be a small amount of homework set each evening.
During the practical course elements you will build on previous experience under supervision from one of our experienced RYA Instructors. You will be directing the crew, coming alongside, handling the boat under sail and power, navigating during the day and getting some night hours under your belt. You will also learn the basics of engine maintenance and be expected to take control in a man overboard emergency situation. Price includes accommodation on board one of our yachts, all meals, fuel & mooring fees during the practicl course.
